When the heart gets out of sync

A heart seminar for patients, relatives and interested parties will be held at the cardiology clinic at the kulmbach hospital on saturday, 10 a.M., to discuss the following topics. November, from 10 a.M. To 12 p.M. Around the topic "heart auber takt – atrial fibrillation: causes, detection, treatment". In addition to lectures on the topic in the first basement of the hospital, a tour of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at the hospital is also offered as part of the heart weeks of the german heart foundation. There is also information about the telemedicine project based at the hospital.

"When the heart no longer beats at a regular pace, we speak of cardiac arrhythmia," he says, explains senior physician andreas brugger from the hospital’s cardiology department. Many different forms of irregular heartbeat are hidden behind this umbrella term. "Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia. The risk of contracting this widespread disease increases with age", the senior cardiologist. According to brugger, atrial fibrillation is not life-threatening. However, the irregular heartbeat can lead to blood clots in the heart. If carried away by the blood flow, such a clot can cause a fibrillation. Stroke is the most common and most serious complication of atrial fibrillation. It is not uncommon for patients with a weak heart or stroke to be admitted to hospital and learn for the first time that atrial fibrillation is responsible for it. This is especially true for elderly patients. The risk of atrial fibrillation increases with age. "And stroke cases triggered by atrial fibrillation often have a particularly severe course", warns brugger.

Anticoagulant drugs can protect against this consequence. However, this prevention can only be used by people who know that they suffer from atrial fibrillation. "Many people don’t even realize that they have atrial fibrillation and are therefore exposed to the risk of stroke without protection.", warns brugger. How atrial fibrillation can be detected is therefore a question that concerns everyone.

With drugs to inhibit blood clotting, major progress has been made in recent years. But there are also new insights into the causes and treatment of atrial fibrillation. A long history of atrial fibrillation can lead to cardiac insufficiency, which can significantly reduce the performance and quality of life of those affected. The heart foundation’s aim is to provide concrete answers to the question of what can be done to make the heart more efficient again. The cardiologists at the hospital supported this goal with the event.

Participation in the event is free of charge.
